Step One

First of all, create a new canvas, 500×500 pixels with a white background, and then open a random picture of anything (I used this - click)

Step Two

Now make a one-pixel horizontal selection, (anywhere on your image) and drag it vertically (ctrl+t) - then take a selection that you think looks nice, as shown to the left.

Now cut this (ctrl+x) and paste it into the new document that you created (on a new layer).

Next, press ctrl+t and drag hold alt and drag the left edge of the bounding box to the end of the canvas.

Step Three

You should now have something resembling that to the left, depending on what image you used.

Step Four

Next, do a polar co-ordinates filter (filter–distort–polar coordinates) and select Rectangular to Polar, which should give something like that to the left.

Step Five

Now switch snap on (view–snap) and turn on rulers (view–rulers) and drag some guides out, and they should snap into place as shown to the left.

Now select the topright, topleft and bottom left sections, and delete them, as shown in the image to the left.

Step Six

Now switch snap on (view–snap) and turn on rulers (view–rulers) and drag some guides out, and they should snap into place as shown to the left.

Now select the topright, topleft and bottom left sections, and delete them, as shown in the image to the left. (click to enlarge)

Step Seven

Now, simply do the same thing to the left edge of the curve, and you have our final result, as shown to the left.)
